BYD’s AI Story, Decoded: The Biggest EV Maker Is Building a Full Physical-AI Stack
Everyone knows BYD as the company that out-produced Tesla. Fewer have noticed what the world’s largest EV maker has been assembling underneath the sales charts: its own silicon, its own vehicle AI architecture, a DeepSeek-powered driving stack — and, since August, its own humanoid robot greeting customers in showrooms. At the unveiling of its XUANJI A3 chip in May, BYD described the strategy in exactly the vocabulary this publication uses: Physical AI. This profile maps what BYD has actually built — because the AI story of the world’s biggest EV maker is among the most underreported in the industry.
God’s Eye: intelligence as a standard feature
In February 2025, BYD made the move that reset China’s ADAS market: its “God’s Eye” driver-assistance system rolled out across 21 models at no extra cost — including the Seagull, priced from 78,800 yuan (under $11,000). Advanced assistance, navigation-based highway and city driving, autonomous emergency braking: features the industry sold as premium options became standard equipment on one of China’s cheapest cars. The strategic logic mirrors BYD’s battery playbook — vertical integration plus scale turns yesterday’s luxury into today’s baseline, and every competitor must respond on BYD’s cost curve.
Xuanji and the A3: the in-house brain
Underneath sits Xuanji, BYD’s integrated vehicle-intelligence architecture — one connected computing platform with 5G rather than the fragmented control-unit patchwork of legacy carmakers. Into it, BYD has woven DeepSeek’s R1 model, adapted from language processing to assist real-time driving and personalisation. And in May 2026 came the boldest layer: the XUANJI A3, BYD’s self-developed 4-nanometre automotive driving chip — natively supporting L3/L4 autonomy, scaling past 2,100 TOPS in a three-chip configuration, announced alongside God’s Eye 5.0 and what BYD calls physical-AI large models with a self-evolving data flywheel. Read together with China’s broader silicon independence push, the pattern is unmistakable: BYD intends to own its entire intelligence stack, from wafer to wheel.
Xiao Di: the robot in the showroom
In August, BYD unveiled Xiao Di — a 1.61-metre, 58.5-kilogram humanoid developed by an embodied-intelligence team the company has staffed since 2022. Its first job is not the factory but the showroom: welcoming visitors, explaining vehicles, running demonstrations, translating in real time between six Chinese dialects and six foreign languages. BYD’s stated aim: two to three robots in every store. Executive Vice President Stella Li put the industrial logic plainly — automotive AI and robotics share the same origins, and the robot race will be decided by manufacturing, software, and hardware capability. The retail frontier
Xiao Di points at something larger: the dealership is becoming an AI deployment site. Add AI sales assistants, intelligent configurators, and data-driven lead handling, and the car showroom — long the most analogue link in the automotive chain — is turning into a testbed for customer-facing Physical AI. For a company building its European network from scratch, every new BYD store is a chance to design that future in, rather than retrofit it later.

BYD is no longer arriving in Europe — with plants in Hungary and Turkey and a dealer network expanding across the continent, it is building here. What Europe has mostly debated as a price and tariff question is, on the evidence above, equally a technology question: the cars carry an integrated AI stack — own chip, own architecture, frontier model inside — that European coverage rarely examines. For European drivers, God’s-Eye-class assistance at Seagull-class prices will reset expectations the moment it clears European regulation.
